Snoring has been identified as
a risk factor for hypertension, heart disease, and stroke.
If you snore, you are not getting the rest you should from
your sleep. You may also be at risk for obstructive sleep
apnea and other serious health disorders.
Snoring not only robs you of the rest you need from your
sleep, it also robs those closest to you. You both wake up
tired, and often feel grouchy during the day. Snoring is the
villain.

| Obstructive sleep
apnea (OSA) |
| OSA is a common chronic disorder of sleep and
breathing that may present as pathological sleepiness with respiratory
and/or cardiovascular complications. OSA is related to repetitive
partial or complete upper airway obstruction which develops
during sleep with manifestations that include snoring, apnea
and hypopnea. The treatment of OSA depends upon the severity
of symptoms, magnitude of clinical complications and etiology
of the upper airway obstruction. Nasal continuous positive airway
pressure (CPAP) is the most common treatment method for OSA,
but some patients are unable or unwilling to tolerate it on
a long-term basis. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP), maxillomandibular
surgery and oral appliances (OA) have been proposed as alternative
therapeutic approaches. |
| Treatment of snoring
with Oral Appliances |
| Oral appliances are being increasingly considered
as treatment options for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.
The types of appliances currently available are designed to
alter different aspects of the oropharyngcal space; e.g., tongue
retaining devices, mandibular repositioning devices, etc. |
